Skiing in Liguria

Skiing in Liguria calls for especially careful advance checks: the mountain region lies close to the coast, but snow conditions and lift operations cannot be reliably inferred from the time of year.

Quick facts

  • The regional park authority currently lists the Monesi di Triora ski area as closed until further notice.
  • For other skiing options in Liguria, too, check opening status, snow conditions and lift operations directly before setting out.
  • A coastal stay cannot necessarily be combined with a day of skiing: road access and elevation determine the actual travel time.
  • Checked on 11 October 2026: the official park website reports no reopening of Monesi.

What the situation in Monesi means

Monesi di Triora is in the western mountains of Liguria, on Monte Saccarello, and can only be reached from the coast via a mountain road. The regional park authority has listed the ski area as closed until further notice since the flooding events of 2016. Previous information on lifts, piste lengths, prices or operating hours is therefore not a basis for making a current booking. Rely on a ski day in Monesi only once the responsible authority confirms a reopening and specific operating days. The Parco Alpi Liguri information on winter sports is a useful starting point; also check local notices before setting off.

The Municipality of Triora also describes Monesi as a mountain village on Monte Saccarello. The village is a useful reference point for exploring the inland landscape, but a beautiful winter setting does not mean that ski slopes are usable or lifts are open. If you are planning a trip, ask whether the road, parking areas and facilities you want to use are actually available. This is especially important if you are travelling with children, lots of equipment or a tight schedule.

Don’t assume other winter destinations are available without checking

Santo Stefano d’Aveto is also associated with winter sports, and the municipality publishes information about a ski area. However, a published description of a place or facility does not automatically confirm that a particular lift, slope or ski school will be operating during your planned season. Check the operator’s latest update and ask about opening days, snow conditions, tickets and available activities before finalising accommodation or travel plans.

The Parco Alpi Liguri also lists Colle Melosa as a cross-country skiing destination. Even a described trail may be unusable depending on snowfall and grooming. So check its condition for your chosen day and whether equipment is available locally. Figures for trails, lifts or slopes in older travel reports may be outdated and should not be used for planning.

How to plan a ski day in Liguria

Start with your specific destination, then check the official operating information: Is the facility open? Which slopes or trails are groomed? Is equipment rental available, and are lessons offered? Also check the short-term forecast, wind, visibility and road conditions. Even an open area may not suit your ability or group in unfavourable conditions. Buy tickets only after checking the operator’s latest information, especially if online bookings are non-refundable.

Getting there is a separate part of the day. Monesi and other mountain villages are not on the coastal railway; road conditions and journey times depend on your starting point and the weather. Check your route on the day, allow extra time and carry suitable winter equipment for your vehicle. Don’t assume a sat-nav will know about every temporary restriction. In wintry road conditions, requirements for tyres or snow chains may apply; follow the latest road advisories.

Have a suitable alternative in mind

Since opening cannot be taken for granted, it makes sense to have a backup plan. Depending on the weather, a visit to a mountain village, a shorter hike or a stay on the coast may be suitable; check trail conditions, daylight hours and accessibility in those locations too. If you need lifts to be operating—for example, because you are travelling with children or have limited mobility—confirm the specific facilities and access arrangements by phone before setting out. That way, the proximity of sea and mountains becomes a real opportunity to combine the two, rather than an expectation that beach weather and safe ski slopes are guaranteed on the same day.
