The Apennines are the mountains of a medium hight that strectch through the Italian peninsula for about 1,500 km. The most north-western part of the Apennines is the Ligurian Apennines. The Ligurian Apennines border on the French Maritime Alps in the west, in the north-west they border on the Alps of Piedmont and in the east - with the Etruscan Apennines. The highest point is Mount Maggiorasca. It is 1,803 metres above the sea level. Geologically the Ligurian Apennines belong to adolescent mountains and mainly consist of limestone and sandstone. The mountain ranges, divided by narrow valleys, go from north to south. They represent the watershed between Po Valley in the north (Adriatic Sea) and the Gulf of Genoa in the south (Ligurian Sea).
The mountains located in the north protect the Ligurian coast from severe winds. So, the Ligurian coast developed a mild climate due to the influence of the sea. On the coast along Via Aurelia there are many cities with lots of attractions such as Genoa, La Spezia, Rapallo with its magnificent castle from the 16th century or Portofino, a very picturesque city.
The wooded hill country is especially suitable for a holiday with a cultural focus. Here are not only dreamy small towns but also monasteries, castles or sanctuaries, which are also worth a visit. During the summer months many markets with the products of the region (fruit, olive oil, wine) are held.
In the higher areas of the Ligurian Apennines various hiking destinations are offered. The best time for walks here is from March to October. Walking in the Cinque Terre located in the province of La Spezia is also highly recommended.
A good way to explore the whole Ligurian Apennines is the Ligurian trail of height with the 44 stages from Ventimiglia to La Spezia. The road is usually broad, well-marked and has no major climbs on. It is also known as mountain bike tour. Refreshments and overnight options are abundant. The tents as accommodation are rather rare in the region, but the houses and apartments can be found everywhere. The hotels are mainly located in the coastal cities (i.e. Hotel La Marina in Deiva Marina at La Spezia).
