Ferry Ports in Liguria: Ports, Destinations and Seasons

When travelling by ferry in Liguria, the destination, departure port and exact terminal are three different details. Before setting out, check the address on your ticket and booking confirmation; a city name alone is not enough for navigation.

Ferry ports in Liguria: key facts

  • Genoa is a departure point for longer ferry routes; destinations and sailings depend on the operator and travel date.
  • According to the operator, the ferry port Corsica Ferries calls Savona is located in Vado Ligure.
  • La Spezia also has seasonal coastal services; these are not automatically equivalent to car ferries or overnight ferries.
  • Check the terminal, check-in time and vehicle requirements for your specific booking.
  • Weather, sea conditions and seasonal timetables can affect or change departures.

Genoa: plan your departure and your time in the city separately

A booking that says Genoa does not tell you which pier to check in at. Read the operator’s full departure address and compare it with your planned route to the port. This is especially important if you are arriving by train, taxi or your own car, or plan to spend a night in the city before sailing. Ports and terminals are not necessarily next to the railway station, the old town or your accommodation.

Allow plenty of time to reach the pier and check in. Requirements may vary depending on whether you are travelling on foot or with a vehicle. Keep your booking documents and identification handy, and check in advance where foot passengers need to enter. If you are travelling with a vehicle, confirm its height and check whether trailers, roof boxes or other special features need to be declared when booking; the rules of the relevant operator apply.

Vado Ligure: don’t confuse the ferry port with the cruise terminal

Corsica Ferries lists its port as “Savona-Vado” and gives the departure point as Vado Ligure, Calata Nord – Porto Vado. The operator lists Bastia as a destination; sailing frequency may vary by season. This information is useful for orientation, but it does not replace the details on your ticket or the timetable for your travel date. Use the official Corsica Ferries Savona-Vado port page to check the terminal address and how to get there.

Vado Ligure is not in the same location as the Palacrociere cruise terminal in central Savona. If you book accommodation in Savona, check the journey to the ferry port before making your decision and enter the departure address in your navigation system. If you arrive late, it may also be important to check whether onward transport is still running. For the drive, the information on driving and parking is a useful supplement; check current local access and traffic rules.

La Spezia and coastal boats

In and around La Spezia, boats offering excursions in the Gulf operate alongside the larger ports. These services are intended for a different purpose from a longer crossing with a car and luggage. Depending on the season, landing points, stops and journey times may change; wind and sea conditions also affect trips on the water. If you are planning an excursion to Portovenere or along the coast, choose the right landing point and check the latest information from Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti on the day of travel. A timetable from an earlier visit is not a reliable guide for the next season.

An overnight stay in La Spezia can be useful before an early excursion or onward journey. Compare your accommodation’s location with the railway station, port and actual landing point. If you are travelling overland, see the additional information on train connections in Liguria; if you are travelling independently, the advice on car hire may help.

Checklist before departure

Save the terminal address from your booking confirmation and check whether it has changed since you booked. Confirm the latest check-in time, when boarding begins, and the rules for luggage or vehicles. Travelling with children, pets or mobility aids may require additional documents, designated areas or advance notice. Contact the operator if your booking does not provide clear information.

Also allow extra time for traffic, finding parking and getting around the port. If you are arriving by train, check the last connection after your planned return and consider what your options would be in case of a delay. Weather-related changes cannot be ruled out entirely, so pay attention to the operator’s updates and avoid scheduling important onward connections too close to your arrival.

Making the ferry part of your trip

A ferry crossing can combine a trip to the coast, an island and a city, but it should not be treated as an impromptu stopover. First decide whether you will take a vehicle, whether you will arrive late and how you will get to your next accommodation. Matching your destination port to your itinerary also makes it easier to choose where to stay. Check the timetable and terminal directly with the company you booked with; general guides can help you get your bearings, but the details of your specific booking take precedence.
