Portofino Marine Reserve. Diving and fishing. Is it legal?
Portofino along with Camogli and Santa Margherita Ligure are parts of the Portofino natural park and are a protected Mediterranean marine park. Coastal marine waters of the reserve hide from us unique flora and fauna, which are particularly interesting for divers. Here you can watch the dolphins. The territory of the reserve is divided into three zones: A, B and C. Each of these zones has certain limitations. Zone A is fully closed. In the zone B are allowed diving tours organized by diving centers and private diving under control of authorized officials. Here are also allowed free-diving (scuba diving with breath-hold) and free swimming. Sport fishing is available only for local residents. Diving in zone C does not require a license and is free. Swimming and fishing are allowed for all guests. It is mandatory to observe existing environmental restrictions. Portofino cape coastal areas are located in zones B and C.
The territory of the town is a part of the Portofino regional protected natural park of untouched nature. Among the best entertainments here is walking on hilly terrain of the cape along specially equipped tracks, where you can enjoy clean air, diverse flora and incredible scenery and come to peace with your mind.
Attractions in Portofino
There are few historical attractions in Portofino. At the top of the Punta del Capo cliff is located a lighthouse. Near the lighthouse can be met the church of San Giorgio (XII century), the patron saint of the town, and the Brown castle, which was formerly known as the Castle of San Giorgio (XVII century). All these buildings stand high on a cliff top, so there are fantastically beautiful panoramic views over the village, the church of San Martino, located in the old part of Portofino, and picturesque Ligurian coast. These places are perfect for professional and amateur photographers.
Motor transport is prohibited in Portofino. There are special small parkings, but they are too expensive and in high season are usually fully occupied. Therefore, it is better to reach Portofino by sea from Rapallo, Camogli and Santa Margherita Ligure.
