Pilgrimage Churches in Liguria: Three Special Destinations

In Liguria, pilgrimage churches bring together architecture, local history, and living religious traditions. Savona is home to a larger sacred complex, Montallegro stands high above Rapallo, and a small chapel at Madonna della Guardia preserves the memory of an apparition. Access and visitor arrangements vary from site to site.

Quick facts about three pilgrimage churches

  • Savona combines a basilica with nine votive chapels along the pilgrimage route.
  • Montallegro lies above Rapallo and can be reached by a cable car ride of about seven minutes.
  • Madonna della Guardia is near Ceranesi; access to the small apparition chapel depends on the weather and time of day.
  • Service times do not mean that sites are open for visits throughout the day.

Savona: Basilica and route of the votive chapels

The Santuario di Nostra Signora della Misericordia is in the Val Letimbro near Savona. According to Catholic tradition, the Madonna appeared there to the farmer Antonio Botta in 1536; construction of the complex began that same summer. The three-aisled basilica is flanked by side chapels. A larger hospice, a new façade, and the square were added later. Nine small votive chapels mark the pilgrimage route from the direction of Lavagnola; the fountain on the square dates from 1708.

Visitors primarily interested in art and architecture will find several periods represented side by side in the basilica: the official description names works by Pietro Orsolino, Bernini, Orazio Borgianni, and Domenichino. A visit can therefore be easily combined with a look around Savona’s old town and the Priamar Fortress. The official information page lists daily opening hours of 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as separate times for Mass and prayer. Check the latest information before setting out; services and sightseeing visits may have different access arrangements.

Montallegro: cable car, Barabino frescoes, and votive offerings

The Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montallegro stands above Rapallo. Tradition links its origins to a Marian apparition on July 2, 1557; construction was completed in 1559. Inside, frescoes by Nicolò Barabino and numerous votive offerings tell the story of the site’s long-standing religious significance. The church is especially suitable if you would like to combine the history of an active pilgrimage site with art and sweeping views over the Gulf of Tigullio.

A cable car from Rapallo takes about seven minutes to reach the sanctuary. The timetable checked on October 10, 2026, lists service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays; the operator notes that schedules vary by season. The official Montallegro cable car timetable provides the latest details for planning your visit. A notice from the sanctuary sets the afternoon Mass at 4 p.m. for the period from September 16, 2026, to April 30, 2027.

Madonna della Guardia: the small apparition chapel

The Santuario della Madonna della Guardia near Ceranesi, west of Genoa, is another important Marian pilgrimage site. Access to the Cappella della Prima Apparizione is subject to particularly limited opening hours that depend on the weather. The official opening-hours page lists Sunday hours of 9:30 a.m. to noon and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting; confirm that it will be open on the day of your visit. The chapel is small; an earlier marble sculpture of the Madonna is associated with the sanctuary’s history. Precise historical interpretations of the apparition belong to religious tradition.

The basilica publishes a seasonal service schedule, and times change throughout the year. The verified page does not list separate general visiting hours for the basilica. By contrast, access to the small apparition chapel is governed by its own weather-dependent rules.

Which pilgrimage church is right for your visit?

Savona is the obvious choice for important paintings and a larger historic complex. Montallegro is a good fit if you would like to combine art and views with a cable car ride; plan your journey within the published operating hours. Madonna della Guardia is particularly interesting for its small apparition chapel, which is accessible only on Sundays and during weather-dependent time slots. All three are religious sites; service times do not automatically mean that they are open for visits throughout the day.

For a thematic addition to your trip, explore the historical periods of Liguria and other cultural and architectural heritage sites in the region. If you are combining pilgrimage sites with city visits, you could also include Genoa’s old town and sacred buildings. For a base from which to visit Montallegro, consider accommodation in Rapallo; its location differs from that of the sanctuary on the mountain.
